New Jersey will offer its residents the IRS Direct File program, a new free electronic way to file their federal tax returns, starting with the 2024 tax season. Initially, over 1.3 million New Jerseyans will be eligible to use the service, which is now a permanent option for taxpayers in participating states. The program was pilot tested in 12 states, including New Jersey, during the 2023 tax filing season.
