A "critical shortage" of blood culture vials used to diagnose bloodstream infections has been warned by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The shortage could lead to delays in diagnosis, misdiagnosis, and challenges in patient treatment for conditions such as sepsis and endocarditis. BD Life Sciences, the company responsible for the vials, first alerted healthcare providers of intermittent supply delays in early June.
