Oregon State University study shows natural forest regrowth in 45% of suitable areas more cost-effective for carbon sequestration than tree planting alone.
An Oregon State University-led study reveals that reforestation's impact on climate change is complex, and simply planting trees isn't the most cost-effective solution. The research, published in Nature Climate Change, analyzed data from 130 countries and found that allowing nature to regrow forests in 45% of suitable locations is more effective at sequestering carbon at a lower cost than tree planting alone. The study also highlights the importance of wood markets in large-scale reforestation efforts.
