Chinese Chang'e-5 mission finds hydrated mineral ULM-1 with water molecules in lunar samples, marking first direct detection of molecular water within lunar regolith.
Chinese scientists have discovered a hydrated mineral containing water molecules in lunar samples retrieved by the country's Chang'e-5 lunar mission, marking the first direct detection of molecular water within the lunar regolith. The mineral, ULM-1, contains up to six molecules of crystalline water, with water molecules accounting for up to 41% of the sample's mass. This discovery sheds light on the potential sources of water and ammonia on the moon.
