Study finds 27% reduction in ER visits for low-income individuals receiving monthly cash stipends in Chelsea, MA.
A new study suggests that giving cash to low-income individuals could result in fewer emergency department visits. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, looked at nearly 2,900 low-income individuals in the Boston suburb of Chelsea, Massachusetts, who applied for a lottery to receive monthly stipends of up to $400 from November 2020 to August 2021. Researchers found that those who received the monthly payments had a 27% reduction in ER visits compared to those who did not receive the financial assistance.
