The Japanese sea festival in Minamiboso had to rely on volunteers this year as the number of female free divers, or "ama", has dwindled due to aging and lack of interest. The average age of active "ama" is now 72, and the number of female divers in the Shirahama district has dropped by 70% since 2006. To keep the festival alive, organizers have enlisted the help of local and beyond area volunteers.
