Iraq resumed rice cultivation after a two-year ban due to water scarcity. The country is testing a water-efficient rice strain, earmarking 150 sq km for rice growing this season with a forecasted yield of 150,000 tonnes. The ban occurred amid a water crisis linked to upstream dams by Turkey and Iran, less rainfall, and climate change. Iraq is one of the world's top 10 importers of rice and wheat for its food rationing programme.
