2010-2020, India gained 2,66,000 hectares of forest area annually, ranking 3rd globally; efforts recognized despite growing forest vulnerability due to climate change.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports that India gained 2,66,000 hectares of forest area annually from 2010 to 2020, ranking third among top 10 countries with the most significant forest area gains. China led with 1,937,000 hectares, followed by Australia with 4,46,000 hectares. India's efforts in restoring degraded lands and expanding agroforestry through innovative approaches, including a national policy, were praised. However, the report warns that climate change is increasing the vulnerability of forests to wildfires, pests, and other stressors.
