Garfield County pays $2.5M settlement to Kyle Lara's family over 2022 in-custody death, leading to jail's closure.

Garfield County agreed to pay a $2.5M settlement to the family of Kyle Lara, a man who died in custody in 2022, after 18 hours of being undiscovered. The county jail closed in March 2023 and will not be reopened unless it complies with state and federal regulations. The Laras' lawyer claimed this was the largest municipal settlement for an in-custody suicide in state history.
