The Atlanta Braves have signed utilityman Whit Merrifield on a major league deal, following the injury of All-Star second baseman Ozzie Albies, who fractured his wrist. Merrifield, a three-time All-Star, was released by the Philadelphia Phillies earlier this month and is expected to take a bench role with the Braves, allowing top infield prospect Nacho Alvarez to take over for Albies as their regular second baseman.
