Tiwai Point aluminium smelter in NZ reduces electricity usage by 185MW to ease national power supply amid low hydro lake levels.
Tiwai Point aluminium smelter in New Zealand will reduce its electricity usage by 185MW, representing about 4% of the country's energy use, to help ease the tight national power supply. This move comes as Meridian Energy grapples with historically low hydro lake levels. The smelter will commence winding down its operations and start stopping and restarting one-third of its operation until April next year.
