46 Ontario mayors receive strong mayor powers, mostly used with restraint and responsibility in the first year.
In its first year, strong mayor powers have been given to 46 mayors in Ontario, with most exercising restraint in using their new authorities such as vetoing bylaws, proposing and passing them, and hiring/firing department heads. Despite unease in some corners over the sweeping authority, Ontario's largest cities have generally seen mayors use these powers responsibly after careful consideration of community interests.
