BT fined £17.5m by Ofcom for 14,000 unconnected 999 calls due to emergency service failure on 25 June 2023.

BT has been fined £17.5m by Ofcom for a "catastrophic failure" of its emergency call handling service, which led to thousands of 999 calls not being connected. On 25 June 2023, network disruption meant nearly 14,000 call attempts from 12,392 callers were unsuccessful over a ten-hour period. Ofcom found BT had not been properly prepared to handle the incident, lacking sufficient warning systems and adequate procedures.
