Russian prosecutors have requested an 18-year jail sentence for US journalist Evan Gershkovich, accused of spying, in a trial that has been widely condemned. Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, has been held in pre-trial custody for over a year. The US government, Gershkovich's employer, and the journalist himself deny the spying charges.
