30% of Georgia's lakes and reservoirs are reported as impaired with pollutants, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Of the 380,396 acres of water in Georgia's lakes, ponds, and reservoirs tested, 115,800 acres were found to be impaired. In 2022, 25% of the lakes and reservoirs had algae pollution, while 6% each had nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, and 6% had bacteria and muck pollution.
