34-year-old Jesmin Akter, who accidentally killed an 11-year-old neighbour with poisonous gas used to eradicate bedbugs, has been spared jail time by a judge at the Old Bailey. Akter had imported aluminum phosphide illegally from Italy to treat an infestation in her Shadwell, Tower Hamlets, east London flat. She failed to read the packaging before dispersing a lethal amount throughout her flat and taking her family out for 24 hours. The toxic gas seeped into a neighboring flat, resulting in the death of Fatiha Sabrin on her birthday and hospitalizing another young child in December 2021.
