The Irish Prison Service has issued an urgent alert after a fatal overdose of the potent synthetic opioid, nitazene, was detected in an unnamed prison. The substance is associated with several overdoses in Irish prisons and can be found in pill or powder form. The Irish Prison Service is working closely with the HSE and has commenced an information campaign for prisoners about the dangers of consuming non-prescribed drugs. Prison healthcare teams have adequate stocks of naloxone for clinical intervention.
