Snuneymuxw First Nation is regaining a significant downtown Nanaimo site under a major reconciliation deal with the provincial government. The 7-acre property at 1 Terminal Ave., which includes the derelict Howard Johnson Harbourside Hotel, is being returned as part of the 1854 Sarlequun Snuneymuxw Treaty, which promised to protect villages. The plan is to tear down the hotel within four months and develop the site further.
