Chinese and US scientists have found evidence of gene flow between modern humans and Neanderthals. Neanderthals, an extinct species of archaic humans who lived in Europe and Western Asia around 400,000 years ago, likely coexisted and mixed genetically with modern human populations traveling from Africa to the Middle East. Researchers from Southeast University in Nanjing and Princeton University developed a method to estimate human-introgressed sequences within the Neanderthal genome, which was applied to whole-genome sequence data from 2,000 contemporary humans and three Neanderthals.
