Southampton FC has signed Japanese defender Yukinari Sugawara on a four-year contract from Dutch club AZ Alkmaar. The 24-year-old has played professionally since age 17 and has 13 caps for Japan. Sugawara joins Southampton after a five-year stint in the Netherlands, where he made nearly 200 appearances for the first team and set a club record with 53 appearances in European competitions.
