Brazil plans to expand wheat production in Cerrado region to achieve wheat self-sufficiency.
Brazil, a major corn and soybean producer, aims to become self-sufficient in wheat through expansion in the Cerrado region. Currently, the country imports 12 million tonnes of wheat and domestic production meets 80% of its demand. The US Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agriculture Service predicts that the planted area in the Cerrado region could rise from 252,000 hectares in 2021 to 353,000 hectares by 2025, using improved wheat varieties that better suit the region's dry spells and soil types.
