US Forest Service helicopter pilot survives crash near central Idaho wildfire, hikes to safety. Officials say the pilot was responding to a small wildfire when the helicopter crashed in the Sawtooth National Forest. The pilot managed to call 911 and hiked out with assistance to an ambulance waiting nearby. The US Forest Service and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.
