Federal transportation officials have awarded $1.5 billion towards the replacement of the Interstate 5 bridge across the Columbia River, bringing the total federal investment in the project to $2.1 billion. The aging twin bridges between Oregon and Washington will be replaced by two new bridges capable of withstanding a major earthquake. Oregon and Washington have each pledged $1 billion in state funds.
