South Carolina enacts new law to require high school diploma or training for childcare workers, aiming to address shortage and improve access to care.
South Carolina has implemented a new law to address the childcare worker shortage, which is causing months-long waitlists for families seeking care. The legislation, effective July 11, requires childcare professionals employed after June 30, 1994, to hold a high school diploma, high school equivalency credential, South Carolina High School Employability Credential, or complete 15 hours of health and safety training with direct supervision for 30 days by a staff person with at least one year of experience in a licensed center. The new requirements aim to expand access to high-quality and affordable childcare in the state.
