Philadelphia labor leader John Dougherty sentenced to six years for embezzlement and bribing a City Council member.

Former Philadelphia labor leader John Dougherty, who held significant influence in Pennsylvania politics, has been sentenced to six years in prison for bribing a City Council member and embezzling nearly $600,000 from the union he led for almost three decades. Dougherty was convicted in December of embezzlement, conspiracy, and other charges. In 2021, he was separately convicted of bribing a City Council member to support the union's interests. Addressing the court before his sentencing, Dougherty expressed remorse for his actions, admitting he "got out of control."
