Marathon Oil has reached a $241.5 million settlement over alleged air quality violations at its North Dakota oil and gas operations on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation. The settlement with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Justice is the largest-ever civil penalty for such violations. Marathon Oil will be required to pay a $64.5 million civil penalty and implement extensive compliance measures, estimated to cost $177 million, to reduce pollution.
