Colorado confirms a rare human case of bubonic plague, a treatable bacterial infection.

Colorado health officials confirm a rare human case of the bubonic plague, a bacterial infection known for killing millions in 14th century Europe. Although easily treatable with antibiotics, the CDC estimates 7 cases annually in the U.S. The bubonic plague is the most common form, spreading naturally among rodents like prairie dogs and rats, and is followed by septicemic plague and pneumonic plague. Symptoms include painfully swollen lymph nodes, commonly found in the groin, armpit, and neck.
