South Africa's Department of Public Works and Infrastructure lost 16.6 million USD over a decade due to cyberattacks, with 1.5 million USD stolen in May.
South Africa's Department of Public Works and Infrastructure has reported a loss of approximately 16.6 million USD over the past decade due to cyberattacks. Minister Dean Macpherson revealed that in May, cyber criminals stole 24 million rand (about 1.5 million USD) from the department. Investigations are ongoing, with the South African Police Service, State Security Agency, and cybersecurity experts enlisted to find those responsible. Four department officials have been suspended, and 30 laptops have been seized. The cyber theft has temporarily halted the department's payment system, causing delays in creditor payments.
