Northwestern Ontario town Ignace considers hosting a $26-billion deep geological repository for Canada's nuclear waste, led by NWMO.

A northwestern Ontario town, Ignace, is set to decide today whether it will become the site of a deep geological repository for Canada's nuclear waste. The $26-billion project, led by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), aims to replace current storage solutions for used nuclear fuel bundles by storing them in a network of underground rooms connected by cavernous tunnels. The decision-making process has narrowed down potential sites to two: one in northern Ontario and one in southern Ontario, with both the local municipality and the First Nation in these areas needing to agree to be willing hosts.
