Malta's Prime Minister, Robert Abela, has stated that Chris Fearne, currently facing criminal charges, could still potentially be re-nominated as Malta's European Commissioner candidate if cleared by the court. Abela will wait until July 24 for a clearer understanding of the case. Fearne, former health minister, was initially proposed as a candidate for the health commissioner position in the European Commission.
