Ghana may face hunger and malnutrition by 2030 due to a projected drop in national fish production, warns Professor Berchie Asiedu, Dean of the School of Natural Resources at the University of Energy and Natural Resources. Fish consumption is anticipated to reach 888,096 tonnes by 2030, but total fish production is only expected to constitute around 43% of the total fish requirement. Per capita fish consumption is predicted to decline from 28 kg in 2018 to 23.9 kg in 2030. To address this issue, Professor Asiedu calls for urgent policies to accelerate aquaculture development in Ghana, improve fisheries management practices, and explore adaptive strategies to climate change.
