Former UK Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer faces potential jail time for refusing to reveal the names of soldiers who informed him about alleged special forces killings in Afghanistan. Sir Charles Haddon-Cave, chairman of the Afghanistan Inquiry, has ordered Mercer to provide the names by 25 July, as part of an investigation into extrajudicial killings that may have taken place between 2010 and 2013. Mercer has previously refused to disclose the names despite the inquiry's assurances that witnesses would be protected from prosecution under the Official Secrets Act.
