Donna Nelson's family, including daughter Kristal Hilare, attended a pre-trial court hearing in Tokyo, where Nelson, an Indigenous community leader and former federal Green candidate, is fighting a charge of drug smuggling. It was the first time Hilare had seen her mother in over 18 months, and they were not able to communicate. Hilare described the emotional moment of seeing her mother through tears, trying to convey reassurance with a smile.
