China banned new coal-based steelmaking projects in the first half of 2024 for the first time since announcing its climate neutrality goals in 2020. All permitted steelmaking capacity used electric arc furnaces, which are cleaner and run on recycled scrap and electricity. This move is part of China's plan to become carbon neutral by 2060 and green the steel industry, its second-largest carbon emission source.
