Supreme Court orders 29 states/UTs to establish functional Specialised Adoption Agencies (SAAs) or face contempt proceedings.
The Supreme Court has initiated coercive steps against 29 states and UTs for not setting up functional Specialised Adoption Agencies (SAAs) in every district, as required by a November 2023 order. Out of 760 districts, 370 lack functional SAAs, leading to a gap between registrations and actual adoptions. The Court ordered chief secretaries to either comply or face contempt proceedings.
