GNS scientists install 147 seismometers on Paeroa Fault, using "earth's hum" to determine seismic hazard and potential earthquake magnitudes.
Scientists are using low-cost devices to listen to Earth's "hum" and determine the seismic hazard of the Paeroa Fault. GNS researchers installed 147 seismometers in a targeted area south of Rotorua, using the earth's natural rumbles to determine the fault's depth and angle, which helps identify potential earthquake magnitudes. The project was funded by the Natural Hazards Committee.
