The FTC has banned online messaging app NGL from serving users under 18, citing violations of child privacy and consumer protection laws. The app had been marketed as a "safe space for teens" with robust moderation practices, but instead, exposed users to cyberbullying and other harms. NGL Labs, the app's creator, agreed to a $4.5 million settlement to pay consumers affected by the company's practices and an additional $500,000 civil penalty from the Los Angeles District Attorney.
