73-year-old retired farmer Alastair Macgregor, from Central Hawke's Bay, was named Rural Hero at the 2024 Primary Industries NZ Awards for his cyclone recovery work. Macgregor spent over 200 hours re-fencing affected farms, assisted with clean-up, and made six trips to Tutira for fencing help. Despite challenges, Macgregor found satisfaction in helping the community.
