The Nature Conservancy of Canada acquires Carey Island in British Columbia for salmon habitat conservation as part of Canada's 30% land and water protection plan.
The Nature Conservancy of Canada has purchased a 248-hectare island in British Columbia's lower Fraser River, near Chilliwack, aided by the federal government and private donors. Carey Island is a critical salmon habitat, providing essential gravel channels for spawning and rearing grounds, as well as habitat for endangered sturgeon. This acquisition is part of Canada's national conservation campaign to protect 30% of its land and water by 2030.
