Jupiter-sized exoplanet HD 189733 b found to have trace amounts of hydrogen sulphide, suggesting a pungent smell.
A Jupiter-sized exoplanet, HD 189733 b, has been found to have trace amounts of hydrogen sulphide in its atmosphere, suggesting a pungent smell similar to rotten eggs. Located 13 times closer to its star than Mercury is to the Sun, the planet has extreme temperatures of about 927C and vicious weather, including raining molten glass. The discovery of hydrogen sulphide in this exoplanet's atmosphere could offer insights into how sulphur, a building block of planets, might influence gas worlds beyond our solar system.
