450 km³ groundwater loss in northern India over 20 years due to reduced monsoon rainfall and warmer winters.

450 cubic km of groundwater was lost in northern India over 20 years (2002-2021), and climate change is expected to accelerate its depletion further. This loss is equivalent to 37 times the quantity of water the Indira Sagar dam can hold at full capacity. Researchers attribute the depletion to reduced monsoon rainfall (8.5% decline since 1951-2021) and warmer winters (0.3°C increase over the same period).
