UCL study in Nature Communications links smoking to faster cognitive decline in older adults.
A UCL-led study in Nature Communications reveals smoking as a prominent lifestyle factor linked to faster cognitive decline in older adults. Analyzing data from 32,000 adults aged 50+ in 14 European countries, researchers found that smokers experienced cognitive decline 85% faster than non-smokers over a decade. Non-smokers who engaged in regular exercise, moderate alcohol consumption, and social activities had a similar rate of cognitive decline.
