California's workplace violence prevention law (SB 553) is now in effect, requiring businesses to have plans in place to prevent violence, from bullying and harassment to active shooter situations. The law, written by State Sen. Dave Cortese (D-San Jose), was catalyzed by a 2021 shooting at a light-rail yard that left nine employees dead.
