Amtrak's Downeaster in Northern New England has seen increasing ridership since 2001, transporting over 9.5 million passengers and generating $156 million in revenue. Upcoming upgrades include the installation of Positive Train Control (PTC) for enhanced safety and smoother travel, improved signaling, and Continuous Welded Rail (CWR) for faster speeds. Proposals for new stations in West Falmouth and Portland are also in the works.
