Study in British Journal of Educational Studies challenges idea that academically selective schools are necessary for clever pupils to achieve good outcomes. Selective schools, which enroll only top-performing students, are argued to disproportionately benefit high-socioeconomic children, and do not increase chances of university place or job. Researchers tracked 3,000 students over 11 years, finding no significant benefit for those attending selective schools.
