UK releases guidelines for stem cell-based embryo model research to address ethical concerns and advance early human development studies.

The UK has released a code of practice to guide research using stem cell-based embryo models (SCBEMs), three-dimensional biological structures that mimic aspects of early human embryo development. The voluntary guidelines, which prohibit implanting the models into the uterus of a living person or animal, aim to address ethical concerns while enabling scientists to gain new insights into critical stages of early human development. SCBEMs can potentially revolutionize treatments for recurrent miscarriage, understand developmental disorders, and improve the success rate of IVF.
