Health officials are investigating a human case of plague in Pueblo County, Colorado, based on preliminary test results. The plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis, is transmitted by fleas and wild rodents and can infect humans and pets. Symptoms include sudden fever, chills, severe headache, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and swollen lymph nodes. The Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment advises eliminating places where rodents can hide and breed, and avoiding contact with dead animals, to protect oneself and pets.
