10-year-old boy in critical condition after hiking in extreme heat on South Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona. Temperatures reached 113 degrees on Tuesday when firefighters were called to the Mormon Trailhead for a heat-related medical emergency. The boy was found a mile up the trail and treated before being airlifted to the hospital. Phoenix Fire Capt. Shaun Dubios advises hikers to avoid the sun, stay hydrated, limit exposure to the sun, and hike in the early morning or late evening.
