2005-2019 saw accelerated melting of Alaska's Juneau icefield, contributing to global sea-level rise and loss of 64 glaciers since 2005.
The melting rate of Alaska's Juneau icefield, home to over 1,000 glaciers, has accelerated significantly, with the snow-covered area shrinking 4.6 times faster than in the 1980s. Researchers from Newcastle University discovered that the climate change is causing shorter winters and longer summers, leading to more melting and a longer melt season. Since 2000, Alaska has lost more ice than any other region. Between 2005 and 2019, 64 glaciers disappeared, compared to only four between 1948 and 2005. The rapid melting of the Juneau icefield not only affects the local ecosystem but also plays a role in global sea-level rise.
