FDA bans BVO, a food additive linked to health risks, from food products.

The FDA has announced a ban on brominated vegetable oil (BVO), a food additive, due to potential adverse health effects in humans. BVO, a vegetable oil modified with bromine, has been used in small amounts to keep citrus flavoring from floating in beverages. The FDA will no longer allow its use in food products, and companies must reformulate and relabel their products within a year. The additive was removed from the FDA's list of Generally Recognized As Safe substances in 1970.
